The nafs is the enemy within
“If you want to make it to paradise, you don't do it by yourself; you do it through good company.”
The khutbah teaches that the nafs, the self and its lower impulses, is the enemy within, and that believers should resist sin, cultivate remorse, and seek righteous company until obedience becomes beloved.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Jumu'ah requires pausing work, study, and personal busyness to prioritize Allah's command.
- The speaker defines nafs in two senses: the human self and the lower self that urges wrongdoing.
- He explains nafs al-mutma'innah as contentment with what Allah loves and pleasure in worship.
- He recommends righteous companionship and mentorship as the path toward spiritual growth.
- He distinguishes the critical self, nafs al-lawwamah, from the commanding self that urges evil.
- He warns against becoming desensitized to sin and urges acknowledgment, remorse, and intention to change.
In the khateeb's words
“it doesn't make us bad and it doesn't make a person bad it makes us human this is a part of who we are that we have these impulses”
“this is not just doing something that you know is right it's you doing something that you know is right and that's actually what you want to do”
“if you want to make it to paradise you don't do it by yourself you do it through good company”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah was about the nafs, a word that can mean our human self or the lower part of us that pushes us toward wrong choices. The speaker explained that people can grow into a contented self that loves what Allah loves, while many believers live with a critical self that feels remorse after mistakes. The dangerous state is becoming numb to sin and no longer caring when we do what is wrong. We can protect our hearts by seeking righteous company, resisting harmful impulses, acknowledging our mistakes, feeling remorse, and intending to improve.
- When have you had to talk yourself into doing the right thing?
- Who helps you become a better Muslim, and how?
- What is one mistake you can acknowledge and work to change this week?
