Make Islamic learning a family priority
“It all starts from knowledge, and it all starts from learning.”
As the school year begins, Muslim families should intentionally make Islamic knowledge, Qur'an, the Prophet's example, and purposeful tarbiyah visible priorities alongside worldly education.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The back-to-school context raises how families can practically prepare children in both education and faith.
- The first revelation's command to read establishes knowledge and learning as foundational.
- Parents often emphasize grades, assignments, careers, and stability more than prayer, Qur'an, and Islamic basics.
- Families should explain the why behind education and religious practice, using intention to connect worldly study with higher purpose.
- The Qur'an and knowledge of the Prophet guide families along the straight path amid distractions.
- Tarbiyah should begin in infancy through parental example, Islamic classes, beneficial environments, and a dua for beneficial knowledge.
In the khateeb's words
“It all starts from knowledge, and it all starts from learning.”
“This is the first step that we have to realize and understand. That we have to build the priority within ourselves.”
“These are the two simple things. This is our key to staying on the straight path.”
“This is where the tarbiyah starts from. This is where the mindset is built.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah asks families to prepare for the school year by caring about both worldly learning and Islamic learning. The speaker says the first revelation begins with reading, so knowledge matters, but children need more than grades: they need prayer, Qur'an, and knowledge of the Prophet. Parents should show through their own example that the Qur'an is a guide for life and explain why faith and study matter. This teaching should begin when children are very young and be supported by classes and good environments. A simple family practice is to ask Allah for beneficial knowledge and teach the same dua to children.
- What is one thing you want to learn about Islam this school year?
- How can our family show that the Qur'an matters in everyday life?
- What is a good reason behind something you study or practice?
