Raise children with standards and warmth

“I have very high expectations of you and I'm completely in your corner to help you get there.”

The khateeb, at 5:42

The khutbah in 7 steps

  1. Back-to-school concerns prompt reflection on children’s tarbiyah.
  2. The enforcer, protector, and mentor mindsets contrast control, overprotection, and balanced support.
  3. The Prophet’s presence and lived examples made spiritual lessons meaningful.
  4. High standards should be paired with warmth, support, and personal example.
  5. Shortcomings should be addressed directly without public humiliation or shame.
  6. Parents should cultivate excellence, prayer, character, leadership, and love for Allah, His Messenger, and Islam.
  7. The khutbah closes with three takeaways: be present, uphold loving standards, and pursue excellence.

For the dinner table

With school beginning, the khutbah reminds us that raising children is not only about grades but also about faith, character, and preparation for this life and the next. The Prophet Muhammad modeled a balanced way: stay close and present, keep meaningful standards, and offer warmth and help as children grow. We can build this relationship through small daily conversations, shared meals and drives, screen-free time, prayer, and asking about salah, kindness, and character. Our hope is to help children love Allah, His Messenger, and Islam while striving for excellence with humility.

  1. When has someone helped you meet a high standard instead of simply criticizing you?
  2. Which matters of character, kindness, or prayer do you want to strengthen this week?
