Hardship tests faith and calls for repentance
“Allah will test to see who is true in their faith and who is false.”
Hardship is a purposeful test of faith that should lead believers to repentance, patience, steadfastness, and deeper submission to Allah.
The khutbah in 4 steps
- Allah tests people through ease and hardship, calling them to tawbah rather than despair.
- Trials distinguish sincere faith from false claims and can elevate a believer’s rank.
- The People of the Trench story illustrates steadfastness, martyrdom, and the opportunity for persecutors to repent.
- Listeners are urged to remain steadfast, submit to Allah, and seek forgiveness, followed by community announcements.
In the khateeb's words
“the severest trials are upon the prophets then those next in rank and those next in rank”
“Fitna is a test that will determine if the gold is genuine or not. Literally. It's a test to see who is real and who is fake.”
“Allah will test to see who is true in their faith and who is false. who is true in their claim and who is false in their claim.”
For the dinner table
Allah tests people through both ease and hardship, and those tests reveal the sincerity of our faith. A difficult time is not automatically a sign that Allah has abandoned us; it can invite tawbah, patience, and spiritual growth. The khutbah recalled how prophets, the Sahaba, and the believers in the People of the Trench remained steadfast under terrible pressure. We should respond to our own trials by turning back to Allah, increasing our submission, and asking for help. Even those who wronged believers were reminded of the door of tawbah, so we should never lose hope in repentance.
- What kind of challenge can help a person become more sincere?
- How can our family practice patience and submission during a hard week?
- Why should we keep hope in repentance, even after serious mistakes?
