Repentance leads to a life of remembrance
“Make my tongue a murmur of your remembrance, and my heart a firm one of your love, and grant me your good response.”
The program urges worshippers to seek Allah through repentance and remembrance, honor mothers, and mourn the sacrifices of Imam Husayn and his family at Karbala.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Arabic supplications seeking forgiveness, mercy, protection, and nearness to Allah.
- Reflects on sin, divine punishment, repentance, and hope in Allah's mercy.
- Asks for lives filled with remembrance, service, accepted deeds, and protection from evil.
- Shifts to Urdu and Persian elegies praising mothers as sources of mercy and moral formation.
- Presents mourning poetry about Ashura and Karbala, focusing on Zaynab, Sakina, al-Abbas, Ali Akbar, and Umm Layla.
- Closes with salutations to Imam Husayn, the Prophet, and the Ahl al-Bayt, alongside prayers for the deceased.
In the khateeb's words
“make my tongue a murmur of your remembrance, and my heart a firm one of your love, and grant me your good response.”
“Think of mother as the mercy of God for humanity.”
“The way a mother is, is the same as her son.”
“The burning tents were there, and the children who had suffered in the mother's lap were there.”
For the dinner table
This program begins with long prayers asking Allah for forgiveness, mercy, protection, and closeness. It then remembers mothers as sources of mercy and moral formation, before mourning the suffering of Imam Husayn's family at Karbala through marsiya and noha. The closing salutations affirm love for Imam Husayn, the Prophet, and the Ahl al-Bayt, and the gathering prays for the deceased. We can carry its message by repenting, remembering Allah daily, honoring our mothers, and caring for people who are grieving.
- What is one way we can remember Allah more consistently this week?
- How do mothers and caregivers shape the character of a family?
- What can we learn from remembering the suffering of Karbala?
