Hardship can bring us closer to Allah
“What is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala teaching me today?”
Life is a test in which every hardship can draw us nearer to Allah, cultivate qualities He loves, and call us to serve humanity and the ummah through sacrifice, unity, and justice.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Affirms Allah’s oneness, nearness, and the believer’s freedom from spiritual loneliness.
- Uses Quranic signs in creation to present life as purposeful and directed toward return to Allah.
- Reframes hardship as an opportunity for remembrance, patience, forgiveness, kindness, and maintaining a good opinion of Allah.
- Warns that shaytan exploits conflict and urges believers to forgive and preserve ummah unity.
- Presents sacrifice as the path to Allah’s love, illustrated through the Prophet’s trials before Isra and Mi'raj.
- Calls Muslims in America to use their time, wealth, skills, and influence for faith, justice, humanitarian service, and societal improvement.
In the khateeb's words
“The believer does not suffer from loneliness knowing that the void within the heart and even the calamities and trials and the insecurities and the worries and the fears in this world are a gift.”
“The believer, on the other hand, may face trials, may face tribulations, may face calamities, but their mindset is Allah is generous. Allah is giving, not taking.”
“we have to take on the qualities Allah loves. So look at every circumstance in your life with the question of what is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala teaching me today?”
“Sacrifice is the key to love, my brothers and sisters. And sacrifice requires trials and calamities and tests.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Allah is one, close to us, and never leaves us alone. Our worries and hardships can become opportunities to remember Him, keep a good opinion of Him, and grow in patience, forgiveness, kindness, and generosity. The Prophet Muhammad’s sacrifices, including the hardships before Isra and Mi'raj, show how difficulty can lead to honor when we remain faithful and merciful. We should protect unity by resisting anger and resentment and by forgiving one another. As Muslims in America, we are encouraged to use our time, abilities, wealth, and influence to serve the ummah, help the oppressed, and make our wider society better.
- What is one challenge that might be teaching you patience or kindness?
- How can our family prevent disagreements from turning into resentment?
- What is one useful skill or resource we can share with others?
