Learn the Quran and serve Allah's cause
“Your reward is not victory, but your reward is work.”
Muslims must raise their ambitions by learning and living the Quran and actively serving Allah’s cause instead of being consumed by worldly life or waiting passively for victory.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Quranic reminders to fear Allah and cites Surah al-Tawbah on worldly attachment weakening believers’ willingness to act.
- Contrasts years spent on careers and entertainment with reluctance to devote even thirty minutes daily to studying the Quran.
- Presents the Quran as guidance for worship, family life, social conduct, and communal strength, warning that ignorance leaves Muslims vulnerable.
- Broadens service in Allah’s cause beyond warfare to learning, community participation, humanitarian solidarity, and work across all fields.
- Uses the endurance of the Muslim Ummah, the Prophet’s Hijrah, and Abu Bakr’s resolve as examples of acting on faith before victory is visible.
- Closes by urging Quranic commitment, purposeful service, and support for the visiting Wichita mosque’s expansion.
In the khateeb's words
“Your reward is not victory, but your reward is work. It doesn't matter.”
“But if you want to be and move forward, then you live in victory.”
“This is not blaming anyone or making anyone feel bad. Since you're alive today and breathing, your chance is there.”
For the dinner table
Shaikh Hussam Madi encouraged us to raise our ambitions and make time for Allah alongside school, work, and other responsibilities. He reminded us that the Quran offers guidance for how we treat people, raise children, worship, and face life's happy and difficult moments. His aim was to encourage us to grow, rather than leave us feeling bad about what we have missed. He emphasized that our reward is for doing the work, even when we do not get to see the results. Everyone has something to contribute, and he ended by inviting support for a mosque expansion in Wichita that would help worshippers and ease parking problems for neighbors.
- What is one thing you would like us to learn together from the Quran this week?
- When have you kept doing something good even though you could not see results yet?
- What talent or interest could you use to help our mosque or neighbors?
