Study the Quran for guidance and growth
“Our duty is to bow whatever is in the womb to the service of Allah.”
Muslims should study the Quran thoughtfully, dedicate themselves and their communities wholly to Allah, and cultivate the hidden potential Allah places in people.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The khutbah opens with tawhid, humility, taqwa, and worship.
- Islam begins with the command to read, making Muslims a community of thinkers.
- Listeners are urged to study Isa's story in the Quran for guidance, especially in Ali Imran and Maryam.
- The vow of the wife of Imran teaches sincerity, freedom from competing loyalties, and responsibility to cultivate children and communities.
- The khutbah honors women's God-given value, trusts Allah to elevate unexpected people, and closes with prayers for humility, compassion, justice, and relief for suffering people.
In the khateeb's words
“Islam is for thinkers. Our religion is for thinkers. The Qur'an produced thinkers.”
“Our duty is to bow whatever is in the womb to the service of Allah.”
“Our job as an ummah, as a society, as thinkers, and as servants of Allah is to create another womb.”
For the dinner table
Imam Wazir Ali reminded us that Islam calls us to read, think, and seek Allah’s guidance. He encouraged us to study the Quran’s story of Isa to learn wisdom for our own lives, including by reading Ali Imran and Surah Maryam. Reflecting on Maryam’s mother dedicating her child to Allah, he asked us to build caring communities where children’s unknown gifts can grow in service to Him. He reminded us to ask Allah to accept our efforts and to avoid attachments that pull us away from serving Him. He also emphasized honoring women and recognizing that Allah can bring great good through people others overlook. He closed by asking Allah for humility, compassion, and relief for people who are suffering.
