Turn to Allah instead of despair
“In times of adversity and despair and trouble, we should have already developed a reflex reaction to turn to Allah seeking His messages of hope.”
Muslims should actively seek and hold onto Allah's messages of hope, found in the Qur'an, the Prophet's example, and creation itself, especially in difficult times, turning to Him in prayer, patience, and good deeds rather than despair.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening greetings and Quranic call to taqwa, truth, and righteous deeds
- Warning against distraction by devices and social media, and reminder of Allah's nearness
- Messages of hope in the Qur'an, the Prophet's example, and the natural world
- Acknowledgment of real suffering and injustice in the world, but refusal to let it cause despair or neglectful worship
- The believer's balance between hope and fear, and the promise that Allah's help and relief are near
- Practical response: turn to Allah by reflex, seek forgiveness, and serve fellow believers
- Closing hadiths on Allah's mercy and the rewards of easing others' burdens
In the khateeb's words
“We will be losers except those, not those who stay on their cell phones, not those who follow everything on social media, except those who have faith, and do righteous deeds, and join together in the mutual teaching of truth, and of patience, and of constancy.”
“We are constantly craving connection, even with total strangers calling us to other than Allah.”
“In times of adversity and despair and trouble, we should have already developed a reflex reaction to turn to Allah seeking His messages of hope.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that Allah is always near and available through salah, dua, remembrance, the Quran, the sunnah, and faithful community. We are surrounded by signs of His mercy and hope, in creation, in ourselves, in revelation, and in the Prophet's example. Difficult news and suffering are real, but they should not make us neglect worship or surrender to despair, because Allah's help is always near and relief accompanies hardship. We should live with hope in Allah's mercy and fear that keeps us humble, responding to hardship with trust, patience, and action. We are also encouraged to seek forgiveness, ease others' grief, help those in need, seek knowledge, and gather around the Quran.
