Patience and dua carry believers through trials
“To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return.”
Because every person will face tests, believers should respond with patience, persistent dua, reliance on Allah, and compassionate support for those suffering.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Establishes that illness, loss, fear, hunger, and grief are universal tests.
- Connects global suffering in Gaza, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, and elsewhere to the Quranic call for patience.
- Explains that prophets were tested most severely and received multiplied reward.
- Presents dua as worship and the believer's primary refuge in distress.
- Lists powerful times and practices for dua, including Friday, night prayer, sujood, and seeking parents' prayers.
- Uses the speaker's mother's persistent dua for Medina and al-Baqi as an example of hope.
- Concludes with prayers for oppressed communities and a brief humanitarian aid appeal.
In the khateeb's words
“To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return. That is comfort, brothers and sisters. Solace, blissfulness at a moment when we are tested the most.”
“the one who enables your manager to sign your paycheck we don't remember Him”
“Allah is able to do anything and everything but brothers and sisters we must ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to give us”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that everyone faces tests, including people who seem to have everything they need. The khateeb encouraged us to be patient and find comfort in remembering that we belong to Allah and will return to Him. He explained that dua is worship and urged us to call on Allah both when we are hurting and when life is going well. Through the story of his mother's persistent prayer to live in Madina and be buried there, he encouraged us to keep asking with hope. He also reminded us to care for people facing war and hunger, and asked us to help provide food and medicine for Gaza.
- What is one blessing you want to thank Allah for and ask Him to protect?
- When could you make a little more time for dua this week?
- What could we do together to help someone who needs food?
