Make every effort, then accept Allah’s decree
“Learn to be happy with the decree of the Almighty.”
Imam al-Shafiʿi’s wisdom teaches believers to combine sincere effort with acceptance of Allah’s decree, resilience, generosity, halal living, and awareness that worldly conditions and life itself are temporary.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with Allah’s uniqueness, purposeful creation, and life as a test.
- Uses Imam al-Shafiʿi’s poem to teach effort, resilience, and contentment with divine decree.
- Encourages self-examination when goals fail and emphasizes loyalty, honesty, and trustworthiness.
- Distinguishes stinginess from generosity and presents giving as a means of spiritual improvement.
- Warns that haram income and consumption weaken worship, urging halal provision and contentment.
- Concludes that prosperity, hardship, and life all pass, then gives community announcements.
In the khateeb's words
“learn to be happy with the decree of the Almighty learn to make peace that this is what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has in store for me”
“the pious were those people when they didn't meet their goals when they didn't meet their aspirations where they weren't hitting their hopes their first point of introspection and retrospection was themselves”
“a body that is nourished by a haram will never be able to perform obedience of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“The earth is vast, the land is spacious, the horizons are broad Travel, disperse yourself through the land, see the creation of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah asks us to work hard while accepting the results He decrees. When life becomes difficult, we can stay resilient, examine our own choices, and keep loyalty, honesty, and generosity alive. The speaker warned that haram earnings and food can make worship harder, so we should seek halal provision and avoid gambling, interest, and other forbidden income. Wealth, hardship, happiness, and sorrow all pass, while death eventually comes to everyone. We can carry these lessons by planning carefully, giving generously, checking ourselves, and trusting Allah.
- What is one hard thing you can work on while still trusting Allah with the result?
- How could our family practice generosity this week?
- What helps us keep our food and money halal?
