Faith is proven through patient action
“It's not a word to say, but it's a reality to live.”
True iman is proven through patient action and purified through trials, so believers must fear Allah alone rather than people, status, safety, or income.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opens with Surah al-Ankabut’s principle that claims of faith must be tested.
- Defines iman as a lived trust expressed through action, patience, striving, and responsibility, not inheritance or custom.
- Explains spiritual migration from sin to obedience and striving as grounds for hoping in Allah’s mercy.
- Urges self-examination about whether one belongs among the true believers.
- Identifies fear of people, jobs, income, safety, reputation, and worldly stability as threats to faith and moral courage.
- Uses Quranic warnings and the Ibn Abbas teaching to affirm that Allah alone controls ultimate harm, benefit, mercy, and dignity.
- Closes by presenting fear of Allah as a source of inner peace, stronger faith, and a masjid-shaped identity.
In the khateeb's words
“The spiritual one is really to be on the path of the righteousness. To move and migrate from the state of sinning to the state of obedience, of listening, of humility to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“As we said, it's not a word to say. But it's a reality to live. It's a trust to fulfill. And a struggle that requires perseverance, endurance and patience.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that iman is more than words we say or customs we inherit: it is a trust we live through our actions. The khateeb explained that life's tests can help purify our hearts and strengthen our patience and perseverance. He encouraged us to examine ourselves humbly and let faith guide our choices, including how we correct ourselves and treat others fairly. He warned that fear of losing comfort or facing criticism can pull us away from our values. He called us to trust Allah's care and turn our hearts toward Him as we seek His mercy.
- What is one way you could put your faith into action tomorrow?
- When fitting in feels difficult, what could help you stay true to your values?
- How could our family help someone practice patience during a hard time?
