Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb talked about despair, the feeling that something is over and can never get better. He said a Muslim should never lose hope in Allah's mercy. Even when we fail a class, lose a job, or face a hard illness, Allah's promise is true, but it comes on His timing, not ours. He reminded us of the Treaty of Hudaybiyah: it looked like a setback, yet Allah called it a victory, because Allah's scale is different from ours. He also told us about an old watch that was worth $5 to one person and millions to a museum, to show that the people we spend time with can raise or lower how we see ourselves. So let's keep good company, be patient, keep trying, and keep both fear of Allah and hope in Him in our hearts.

  1. Have you ever felt like giving up on something? What helped you, or what could help you, keep trying?
  2. If you were that old watch, what kind of friends would make you feel 'priceless'?
  3. Why do you think Allah sometimes makes us wait before good things happen?
