Build a confident Islamic identity in America
“We want to be able to say we left something for our children and grandchildren after us to follow and not get lost.”
Muslims in America should build a confident Islamic identity rooted in the Quran and Sunnah while intentionally investing in their families, youth, and communities.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah frames Jumu'ah attendance as a blessing and a reminder of Muslim identity.
- It distinguishes cultural baggage from the task of shaping an Islamic identity in America.
- It interprets prophetic guidance on imitation as a call to distinctive faith, manners, and character.
- It urges Muslims to follow the Quran and Sunnah, seek scholarly guidance, and examine their desires.
- It calls families and communities to coordinate institutions and invest in future generations.
- It closes with a request for support and prayers for guidance, unity, and steadfastness.
In the khateeb's words
“So there is no way around that Islamic identity. We have to start thinking seriously about that because our communities are evolving at a fast pace.”
“And know that if all people gather against you to harm you in any way, they would not be able to without the permission of Allah.”
“We want to be able to say we left something for our children and grandchildren after us to follow and not get lost.”
For the dinner table
Dr. Ahmad Nusair reminded us that being able to attend Jumu'ah is a blessing and that the masjid helps us remember who we are as Muslims. He encouraged us to build an Islamic identity rooted in the Quran and the Prophet’s example, showing the beauty of Islam through our manners and behavior. He reminded us to rely on Allah and seek guidance from scholars and elders as we navigate life. He also asked us to look honestly at ourselves and make an effort, rather than simply hoping that we and our children will grow stronger in faith. Through his community’s plans to build a masjid and bring Muslim communities together, he encouraged us to prepare thoughtfully for future generations.
- What is one way you could show beautiful Muslim manners at school or at home tomorrow?
- What question about being Muslim would you like to explore with someone you trust?
- What could our family do this week to help us grow closer to Allah together?
