Obedience brings Allah’s protection
“When you uphold and preserve and protect your relationship with Allah, know that Allah protects you in your life.”
By protecting our relationship with Allah through obedience and remembrance, we become aware of, and receive, His protection in everyday life, our spiritual future, and even our descendants.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Revisits the Prophet’s advice to Abdullah ibn Abbas and defines protecting Allah as obeying Him and avoiding prohibitions.
- Explains divine protection through a broader Qur’anic worldview that includes angels, jinn, and realities beyond material causes.
- Uses driving incidents, a gas leak, reflexes, and trauma to illustrate Allah’s protection in ordinary life and the human body.
- Warns that neglecting one’s relationship with Allah and harming oneself when young can affect later life.
- Connects personal righteousness with blessings and protection reaching children and descendants through the example in Surah al-Kahf.
- Concludes with remembrance, Bismillah, gratitude, dua for families and communities, and prayers for oppressed people.
In the khateeb's words
“when you uphold and preserve and protect your relationship with Allah, know that Allah protects you in your life.”
“Your behaviors today, the way you choose to live your life, does not only affect your life, it can translate to blessings for those in your progeny, your direct children, your grandchildren.”
“The believer always takes Allah's name as an acknowledgement that I'm only able to do anything that I'm able to do with Allah's help and protection.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us to care for our relationship with Allah by following His commands and choosing what pleases Him. The khateeb encouraged us to notice Allah's protection in everyday life, including moments when we might give all the credit to our own abilities. His account of a teacher who lost loved ones in an accident reminded us how precious it is to arrive home safely. He also explained that our good choices can bring blessings to our children and future generations. Saying Bismillah, thanking Allah, and making dua for our children are everyday ways to remember how much we depend on Him.
- What is something ordinary that happened today that you want to thank Allah for?
- When you say Bismillah before your next meal, what would you like to remember?
- What good habit could our family practice this week to strengthen our relationship with Allah?
