Lasting happiness comes from pleasing Allah
“Make Allah Azza wa Jal happy and Allah will be happy with you.”
Lasting happiness comes from pleasing Allah and investing one's life in faith, patience, gratitude, and obedience rather than temporary worldly pleasures.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines happiness as a universal pursuit and warns that worldly pleasures can become sources of misery.
- Uses Qur'anic examples of storms and ruined crops to show the instability of worldly life.
- Contrasts temporary worldly joy with everlasting happiness through Allah, mercy, Paradise, and the straight path.
- Applies the message to personal choices, marriages, businesses, the Muslim community, and the consequences of sin.
- Teaches believers to respond to hardship with patience, gratitude, trust in Allah's decree, and reliance on Him.
- Closes with supplications for steadfastness and persecuted Muslims, followed by a brief mosque donation appeal and prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“you want to be happy make Allah Azza wa Jal happy and Allah will be happy with you”
“the great thing that tragedies do is what breaks your attachment to the dunya gives you sight to understand that it's not going to last you”
For the dinner table
The khutbah says everyone wants happiness, but many worldly pleasures fade or even make us miserable. Lasting happiness comes from pleasing Allah through faith, God-consciousness, obedience, patience, gratitude, and following the Prophet's way. Hard times can remind us that this world is unstable and help loosen our attachment to it, while Allah's promise of Paradise is lasting. We should examine whether sin has entered our personal lives, marriages, or work, and seek Allah's forgiveness and blessing. The khutbah closes by asking Allah to help Muslims remain patient and thankful and to aid persecuted Muslims.
- What worldly thing can make us happy for a moment but not forever?
- What is one blessing we can thank Allah for today?
- How can we practice patience when something disappointing happens this week?
