Purify the heart to protect your faith
“Purification of the desire is not an optional thing; it is compulsory.”
The khutbah argues that Muslim success depends on purifying the heart from destructive desires and protecting faith through remembrance, reliable scholarship, humble listening, and sacrificial service.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines tazkiyah as purifying the nafs from both good and destructive desires.
- Examines worldly attachment, lust, anger, jealousy, and arrogance as diseases of the heart.
- Presents willpower, remembrance of Allah, and companionship with pious people as remedies.
- Warns that unanswered doubts, self-guidance, and selective scholarship can weaken modern Muslims’ worship and faith.
- Uses Hudaybiyyah to illustrate submission to prophetic guidance despite incomplete understanding.
- Calls listeners to hear elders humbly, resist arrogance, and serve the community despite inconvenience.
- Concludes with prayers, congregational worship, and community announcements concerning classes, events, Gaza, and donations.
In the khateeb's words
“purification of the soul purification of the desire is not an optional thing it is compulsory it is an obligation on each one of us”
“But khidmat is when you overlook those things and you serve those things, let's serve a greater purpose.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbahs reminded us to care for our hearts and our relationship with Allah. The first khateeb spoke about working on anger, jealousy, arrogance, and becoming too focused on worldly things. He described willpower, remembering Allah, and spending time with pious people as ways to purify our hearts. The second khateeb encouraged addressing spiritual doubts and seeking knowledgeable guidance instead of relying only on our own interpretations. He also reminded us to listen humbly, even when a lesson sounds familiar, and to serve our community. As a family, we can support one another by practicing patience, making time to remember Allah, and helping others within our abilities.
- What could help you pause and choose your words when you feel angry?
- What question about faith would you like us to explore with someone knowledgeable?
- Who could we help this week, and what could we do together?
