Hardship can purify and redirect the believer
“The pain we go through and the trials we experience are Allah's way of making us stronger.”
The khutbah argues that hardship is an intentional process through which Allah purifies, strengthens, heals, and redirects the believer toward Him.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with praise, testimony, and a call to taqwa and unity.
- Introduces the continuing theme that believers are tested according to their commitment.
- Explains human hardship as intentionally created for struggle, growth, and spiritual formation.
- Uses the liver as a metaphor for filtering pride, panic, control, and satanic influence.
- Uses darkness, the womb, and the furnace refining gold to portray trials as protective purification.
- Concludes by urging trust in Allah's process, spiritual regeneration, and renewed movement toward Him.
In the khateeb's words
“we have to be able to not just show that we believe that Allah has total control but we have to show that we can accept that life will be lifey”
“the pain we go through and the trials we experience are Allah's way of making us stronger so that maybe the next time the pain or the trial does not hurt us so bad”
“we're not being abandoned in the dark nor are we being consumed by the flames we're in the hands of el mutafil the purifier undergoing the very filtration designed to restore our souls to that wholeness”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that hardship is part of human life and does not necessarily mean Allah has abandoned or is punishing us. Difficult experiences can purify the heart, strengthen us, and help us release pride, panic, and the desire to control everything. Like a liver filtering toxins or gold being refined in a furnace, the process can be painful while still serving a healing purpose. We should not seek suffering, but we can face it with trust and patience. After hardship, healing should help us return to the path toward Allah with clearer hearts.
- What is one difficult thing that might be helping you grow?
- What does it mean to release panic or the need to control everything?
- How can we move from reacting to a problem toward trusting Allah?
