Invest in worship and young people
“A believer is not a short-term thinker.”
The khutbah urges believers to make long-term Islamic investments in worship and especially in young people, because these efforts benefit the community and endure into the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 4 steps
- Begins with gratitude, testimony of faith, and an investment metaphor contrasting worldly and eternal returns.
- Encourages long-term thinking through vivid descriptions of Jannah and its rewards.
- Calls the community to invest deliberately in youth through mentorship, skills development, and real responsibility.
- Closes with prayers for families, the sick, Gaza, the deceased, and the wider Muslim community, followed by salah.
In the khateeb's words
“But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's investments, have no end date.”
“You see, a believer is not a short-term thinker. We don't think about just five or ten years.”
“This kid's a good memorizer. This kid likes to do engineering. This kid likes to do art.”
“If the youth are all about setting up tables and chairs, you lost the plot.”
For the dinner table
Today's khateeb flew in from Toronto, and he talked to us about investments. He said money and things in this world always have an end date, but anything we invest for Allah lasts forever. He described Jannah in amazing detail: homes made of gold and silver bricks, trees so big a rider would need 30 years to cross their shade, rivers of milk and honey, and best of all, finally seeing Allah. He taught that small deeds go a long way. Saying SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, and Allahu akbar plants a tree in Jannah, and praying the 12 sunnah rak'ahs each day builds a palace there. He also reminded us of the young people in Surah Al-Kahf, who asked Allah for mercy from Himself and for His guidance in their affairs. Finally, he said our most important investment is in our young people: noticing their gifts, trusting them with real responsibility, and helping them grow so they can one day serve the whole community.
- If you could ask one prophet a question in Jannah, like Prophet Nuh about building the ark or Prophet Yunus about being swallowed by the whale, what would you ask?
- What is one tree you could plant in Jannah today with just a few words of dhikr?
- What is a special skill or talent you have that you could use to help our masjid or community one day?
