Raise children with mercy and hope

“One out of four young men or women who grew up as Muslims no longer identify as Muslims.”

The khateeb, at 9:44

In one sentence

The greatest legacy a Muslim can leave is a righteous child, and the only way to raise and protect youth whose faith is under siege is to embody the Prophet's mercy, patient, affectionate, hope-filled nurturing rather than judgment and condemnation.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opening: a righteous child who makes du'a for you is the greatest inheritance
  2. The crisis: youth leaving Islam (1 in 4), loneliness and hidden suffering on college campuses
  3. Consolation from the prophets: Ibrahim's fear for his children, Nuh losing his son, Ya'qub's grief over ten sons
  4. Diagnosis: holding onto faith is like clutching a hot coal amid stacked darknesses (secular, materialistic culture)
  5. Prophetic examples: Anas's 10 years without a harsh word, kissing and honoring Fatima, carrying Hasan/Husayn in sujood, hugging the crying tree trunk
  6. Children are seeds needing fertile soil: patience, love, trust in youth, and hope (Umar's conversion), closing du'as
Try this week
Steady the hand of youth whose faith is burning them, support them instead of judging or condemning from the outside
Smile at your children and others, the Prophet called smiling sadaqah and never frowned at young Anas in 10 years
Be patient and make du'a for wayward children rather than despairing, hearts are in Allah's hands, our job is to plant
Welcome newcomers and young people in the masjid with warmth so they feel belonging instead of drifting away
Trust young people with real responsibility to help them fulfill their potential, as the Prophet did with 18-year-old Usama
Sources the khateeb cited
Sahih al-BukhariServed the Prophet 10 years without a single 'uff' or harsh word, the standard for how we treat young people
Sahih al-BukhariThe Prophet stopped his khutbah to hug the crying tree, being present for pain even in a tree shows the depth of required compassion
