Knowledge should lead to worship and good conduct
“You ask Allah for Jannah and then you say words that are pleasing to Allahu subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
Seeking knowledge requires taqwa, righteous companionship, and a response that turns certainty about Allah, Jannah, and Hell into worship, good conduct, and calling others to good.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Defines seeking knowledge as requiring taqwa, piety, and righteous, knowledgeable teachers.
- Uses the story of Abu Bakr and his companion to explain fluctuating iman and the value of righteous company.
- Explains narrations about angels surrounding gatherings of remembrance and honoring seekers of knowledge.
- Calls believers to command good, prohibit evil, and cooperate in righteousness.
- Explains levels of certainty and connects ihsan with worshipping Allah while knowing that He sees us.
- Urges asking for Jannah and protection from Hell while pursuing corresponding words and actions.
- Concludes with the virtue of beneficial gatherings and righteous companionship, illustrated by the musk-and-bellows parable.
In the khateeb's words
“From amongst the etiquettes of seeking knowledge is that you choose those who fear Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and those who have knowledge to teach you.”
“If you didn't know about it yesterday. You should be different today. Because you do know about it. It's supposed to affect you.”
“You ask Allah for Jannah. And then you say words that are pleasing to Allahu subhanahu wa ta'ala. You ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for Jannah. And then you do actions that are pleasing to Allahu subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that seeking knowledge includes trying our best to be righteous and learning from people who have knowledge and fear Allah. Our iman will not always feel equally strong, and good company can help us keep growing. The khateeb described the blessings of gatherings where people remember Allah and encouraged us to invite one another to good. He also reminded us that asking Allah for Jannah should go together with kind words and actions that please Him, while seeking protection from the Fire means avoiding harmful words and deeds. The creation around us, our food, and our families can remind us of Allah and help us worship with the awareness that He sees us.
- Who helps you remember Allah, and what do they do that helps?
- What is one kind thing you could say or do tomorrow to go with your du'a for Jannah?
- What did you notice today that reminded you of Allah's gifts?
