Make istighfar a daily path to forgiveness
“Forgiveness means a way out, a second chance, a feeling of hope with which to turn a new page in life.”
Sincere istighfar, acknowledging sin, turning to Allah, and practicing repentance, opens hope and forgiveness, so Muslims should make it consistently, especially in Ramadan, while forgiving others.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces Ramadan and istighfar as the khutbah’s focus.

- Uses hadith about Judgment Day, Allah’s concealment, and the consequences of faith.
- Explains when and how to seek forgiveness through daily moments, prayer, Friday, and suhoor.
- Links istighfar with halal living, sincerity, Sunnah, anger control, and forgiving others.
- Recommends Sayyid al-Istighfar and other supplications.
- Closes with prayers for the living and deceased and hope in Allah’s mercy.
In the khateeb's words
“Because you don't know when Allah's Maghfirah will come down to you. It is coming down. It's like the rain falling upon you.”
“Forgiveness means a way out, a second chance, a feeling of hope with which to turn a new page in life.”
“Islam encourages us not to run away in fear of Allah, but rather to turn towards Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, the same way a baby would run into his mother's lap.”
For the dinner table
Brother Saleem reminded us that istighfar means acknowledging our mistakes and asking Allah to cover them and forgive us. We can ask for forgiveness throughout the day, including at meals, after prayer, and when waking for suhoor. He encouraged us to ask with attentive hearts and confidence in Allah’s mercy. He also urged us to practice a sunnah, control our anger, forgive others, and make dua for people who are living or have passed away. His message was hopeful: seeking forgiveness gives us a second chance and helps us turn back toward Allah.
- What moment in your day could remind you to ask Allah for forgiveness?
- What could forgiving someone look like in your life this week?
