Trust Allah while taking necessary steps
“Worry, brothers and sisters, about pleasing Allah and Allah will take care of us.”
The believer should take responsible means while placing ultimate trust and hope in Allah, because only Allah controls benefit, harm, protection, and success.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Uses the Prophet’s hijrah and the cave encounter with Abu Bakr to introduce reliance on Allah alongside careful precautions.
- Extends the lesson through Ibrahim’s fire, Hajar and Isma'il in Makkah, Musa’s mother, Musa at the sea, and Yunus in the whale.
- Uses Qur’anic verses and the Ibn Abbas hadith to teach that no one can cause benefit or harm beyond Allah’s decree.
- Applies the principle to seeking Allah’s pleasure over people’s approval, including caution about politicians, elections, and doubtful conduct.
- Closes with examples of Umar and Khalid, Nuh’s son, practical supplications, and a du'a for forgiveness and Gaza.
In the khateeb's words
“And that is to put his trust and his hope in Allah, the Creator. Not in the people, not in those means. Yes, he has to fulfill the means.”
“So just worry, brothers and sisters, about pleasing Allah and Allah will take care of us. This is the most important lesson for us to learn.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah’s main lesson was to rely on Allah while still taking every responsible means. The Prophet prepared carefully during the hijrah, yet his real hope was in Allah, and the khateeb illustrated this through Ibrahim, Hajar, Musa, and Yunus. The speaker urged us to seek Allah’s pleasure rather than live for people’s approval, including when evaluating leaders and political promises. He reminded us that benefit and harm are ultimately in Allah’s hands, so we should stay mindful of Him and avoid doubtful choices. Our confidence should be calm and active: do what is right, then trust Allah with the outcome.
- What is one situation this week where we can plan carefully and still trust Allah?
- When is it hard to choose Allah’s pleasure over other people’s approval?
- How can we appreciate helpful people without forgetting that success ultimately comes from Allah?
