True repentance means stopping and making amends
“The first step of tawbah is Al-Iqlaa, to stop what you're doing.”
Allah's mercy is vast and sincere tawbah requires stopping sin, regretting it, resolving not to return, restoring others' rights, and then seeking forgiveness.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Allah forgives even serious and repeated sins and protects those who repent.
- Allah's love is shown through multiplied good deeds and joy when servants return.
- A traveler recovering his lost camel illustrates Allah's joy at sincere repentance.
- Listeners are urged to take the first step toward tawbah rather than relying only on repeated dhikr.
- Tawbah is presented as stopping sin, regretting it, resolving not to return, restoring rights, and seeking forgiveness.
In the khateeb's words
“All of your sins can be forgiven. Doesn't matter how dark your past is. And it does not matter how many times you have done the same sin.”
“The first step of Tawbah is Al-Iqlaa, to stop what you're doing. That's step number one.”
“Number one, to stop. Number two is regret. And number three is resolve. Number four, to restore any right or any debt that you have to the person that you have transgressed against.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that we should never lose hope in Allah’s mercy, whatever mistakes we have made. The khateeb described Allah’s forgiveness as protection from our sins and spoke about His love and willingness to erase them. He shared the story of a stranded traveler reunited with his camel to help us understand the joy of returning to Allah. He also explained that tawbah, or repentance, means stopping the wrong action, feeling regret, resolving not to return to it, restoring any rights we have taken from others, and asking Allah for forgiveness. As a family, we can encourage one another to take that first step, repair harm, and keep moving toward Allah with hope.
- What helps you try again after making a mistake?
- How could you show love through kindness to someone at home this week?
- If someone damaged a friend’s belongings, what could they do to make things right?
