Knowledge must come before action
“He gave precedence to knowledge over action.”
Muslims should seek reliable, beneficial religious knowledge before acting, then embody it through worship, character, family learning, and community service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Knowledge must precede religious speech and action, and seeking it is an obligation.
- Beneficial knowledge is knowledge practiced, especially learning to perform prayer correctly.
- Muslims should prioritize the afterlife while using worldly skills and work responsibly.
- Seeking knowledge requires patience, humility, reliable sources, and steady effort.
- Families and communities should build regular learning environments and encourage youth toward da'wah.
- Knowledge should produce purification, good character, awareness, and service to society.
In the khateeb's words
“He gave precedence to knowledge over action. So it's very important that the Muslim seeks knowledge and he learns before putting something into practice.”
“Every Thursday night, they would sit together as a family, and they would recite the book of Allah Azza wa Jal”
“The Muslim should be somebody who is awake, who is alert, someone who has understanding”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that learning our religion is an act of worship and that we should learn before we act or teach others. The khateeb explained that beneficial knowledge changes what we do, including helping us pray correctly and with tranquility. He encouraged families to learn together, sharing a memory of Quran gatherings that included reflection and enjoyable time together. He also reminded us to learn patiently and humbly, and to make sure our sources are reliable. Above all, our learning should help us develop good character, draw closer to Allah, and contribute to solving problems in our community.
