Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, May 3, 2026.
A believer is defined by returning to Allah
“It's not the fall that defines him; it's what comes after the fall that defines a believer.”
In one sentence
Allah's forgiveness is for believers who acknowledge their sins, know that only Allah forgives, and repeatedly return to Him through sincere istighfar and habitual inabah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Clarifies that Badr's promise of forgiveness is not permission to sin but a promise tied to repentance and steadfast faith.
- Explains that believers recognize sin, feel remorse, and immediately seek Allah's forgiveness.
- Argues that forgiveness combines istighfar on the tongue with belief that only Allah forgives.
- Uses Abu Bakr's prayer, Sayyidul Istighfar, and repeated-repentance narrations to show the promise of pardon.
- Defines inabah as habitual return to Allah, distinguishing it from a single act of tawbah.
- Illustrates inabah through Ibrahim, Dawud, Sulayman, and Shu'ayb before closing with a prayer.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“a believer falls but then he realizes and it's not the fall that defines him it's what comes after the fall that defines a believer”
“when this becomes his habit his norm his practice then he is someone who will be forgiven”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Allah does not expect us never to make mistakes; He wants us to return to Him when we do. The khutbah says a believer notices the sin, feels its weight, and asks Allah for forgiveness without delay. Istighfar is strongest when the tongue asks for forgiveness and the heart knows that Allah alone forgives. Over time, this repeated return can become inabah, a settled habit of living close to Allah. The prophets are presented as examples of this continual return.
- What helps you remember to ask Allah for forgiveness quickly?
- What could make returning to Allah feel like a comfort zone?
- Which mistake can you turn into a chance to practice istighfar this week?
