Faith and knowledge wake us from ignorance

“We cannot offer salah with physical filth on our body.”

The khateeb, at 17:29

In one sentence

The two greatest gifts Allah gives are iman (faith) and ilm (knowledge), which act as light that wakes a person from the intoxication of dunya and ignorance, purifies their life, reorders their priorities, and leads them to ask life's ultimate question.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Reward of walking to Jumu'ah and the necessity of intention (niyyah) and ihtisab (mindfulness of reward)
  2. Iman and ilm as the two greatest gifts of Allah, per Imam Ghazali
  3. Hadith on the two intoxicants: love of dunya's luxuries and the intoxication of ignorance
  4. The light-and-dark-room metaphor: light wakes you, reveals filth, exposes misplaced priorities, and prompts the ultimate question
  5. Prison converts story from Corpus Christi: removing intoxicants restores consciousness and the question 'why was I given life?'
  6. Continuous self-purification: disposing of sins regularly like showering; spiritual filth versus physical filth in salah
  7. Iman changes thinking and feeling; cynicism about the times is a sign of one's own corruption
  8. Connections as life's true beauty: with Allah, self, family, community; invitations to dawah gathering and workshop

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that Jumu'ah and every good deed begin with sincere intention and awareness of Allah's promised reward. He described iman and ilm as light: they wake us up, help us see the dirt and misplaced priorities in our lives, and guide us to put things right. We cannot avoid every mistake, but a believer keeps cleaning spiritual dirt by turning back to Allah. True knowledge changes how we think and feel, fills us with hope, and helps us notice good in others instead of only their faults. Our lives are made beautiful through strong connections with Allah, ourselves, our families, and our community, so we should make time for those connections and seek iman and knowledge as seriously as we seek food, rent, and other needs.

  1. What is one daily activity where you could pause and renew your intention?
  2. What is one kind of spiritual dirt you would like Allah to help you clean?
  3. How can our family protect a few phone-free minutes to connect with one another?
