A clean heart needs repentance and knowledge
“It's the internal heart that drives our actions.”
Spiritual cleanliness requires avoiding sin, sincerely repenting, cleansing the heart, and pursuing knowledge that strengthens faith and equips believers to defend the oppressed.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Defines fitrah as innate curiosity that can lead to divine truths.
- Explains how sinful environments pollute the heart and weaken connection to Allah.
- Presents repentance as regret, resolve, and lifestyle reform.
- Distinguishes external religious behavior from cleansing the internal heart.
- Urges studying current events, using facts in dialogue, building allies, and trusting God.
In the khateeb's words
“it's not the size of the sin it's the one we are sinning against”
“It's the internal heart that drives our actions. And so the next step that you and I have to do is we have to then learn to clean the internal heart.”
“when one acts upon the knowledge that they have, Allah will give them knowledge of what they did not know.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah has given each person fitrah, an inner curiosity that can help us discover truth. Our surroundings and choices affect our hearts, so we need to avoid sin and sincerely repent when we make mistakes. Repentance includes feeling regret, deciding not to repeat the mistake, and changing habits that lead us back to it. He also explained that looking good on the outside is not enough; our hearts and intentions need care. Drawing on Sayyida Zainab’s example, he encouraged us to study carefully, speak with facts and courage, and work with people of different backgrounds to support those facing oppression. He reminded us that God is with us and that accountability in the next world gives us hope amid suffering.
- What helps you remember Allah during an ordinary school day?
- How could we help each other turn a good intention into a better habit?
- What could we learn together so we can better help people who are suffering?
