Purifying the soul is a lifelong duty
“A person always needs to be aware and attentive to his soul.”
Purifying the soul is an obligatory, lifelong process grounded in the Quran and Sunnah, requiring removal of shirk, innovation, sins, and bad character while gradually cultivating faith and righteous conduct.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines taqwa as obeying Allah knowingly and avoiding prohibitions while seeking reward and fearing punishment.
- Explains that prophetic guidance teaches divine wisdom and purifies the soul.
- Describes the soul’s natural inclination toward good and the forces that can lead it astray.
- Presents purification as removing shirk, innovation, sins, and immoral character, then adding faith, worship, and good morality.
- Emphasizes that worship must follow the Quran and Sunnah rather than personal or cultural preference.
- Explains that purification is lifelong, gradual, balanced, and guided by authentic revelation.
In the khateeb's words
“It is actually an obligatory reminder To remember that there is no rescue in this life Nor in the hereafter without being righteous And pious to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“We don't invent The way we worship Allah We worship Allah As pleases Him Not as pleases us”
“So it's not only one day One month One year It's a lifelong process A person always needs to be aware And attentive To his soul”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that cleansing the soul is necessary for success in this life and the hereafter. We do this by leaving behind shirk, invented religious practices, sins, and bad character, then filling our lives with faith, worship, kindness, patience, and justice. The process takes a lifetime, so we should grow gradually and remain balanced rather than trying to change everything at once. We should keep returning to the Quran and Sunnah and ask Allah to purify and protect our souls.
- What is one good quality you would like to strengthen in yourself this week?
- How can we make a religious habit gradual and balanced?
- What helps you remember to check the state of your heart?
