Fear of people corrupts the heart

“Your Islam is your greatest asset and never a liability.”

The khateeb, at 25:49

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that fear of people and worldly loss corrupts the heart and leads to moral compromise, while reverent awe (khashya) should be reserved for Allah alone, freeing Muslims to live with courage and moral independence.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. The heart is the foundation of the self, and the Quran gives practical direction for purifying it
  2. Fear of creation is the hidden architecture of inward corruption; only Allah deserves khashya
  3. The Prophet's courage in Medina, as described by Anas ibn Malik, exemplifies acting despite fear
  4. Modern fears, public failure, rejection, economic insecurity, and racialized anxiety, distort perception and enslave people to human approval
  5. Muslims must stop selling Allah's signs for a paltry price and must not let fear silence truth or deform relationships
  6. Closing dua asking Allah to free hearts from fear and fill them with taqwa

For the dinner table

The khutbah reminded us that caring for the heart is central, and that the Quran and the Prophet teach us how to do it. Fear can slowly corrupt the heart when it makes us chase approval, hide our faith, hoard what we have, or treat people differently depending on who is watching. We should cultivate khashya, reverent awe of Allah, while remembering that tawakkul means making an effort and leaving the results with Allah. The khateeb encouraged us to examine what controls us, apologize when we are wrong, express love, and live with moral courage. Our Islam should be a source of ethics, compassion, independence, and hope rather than something we treat as a liability.

  1. What is one fear that sometimes stops you from doing what you know is right?
  2. When have you seen someone act courageously even though they were afraid?
  3. What is one small way our family can show more love, honesty, or moral courage this week?
