Raise children with faith and belonging
“We don't make our children choose between Islam and belonging, and it's absolutely a big mistake.”
Muslim families in the West should help young people hold firmly to Islamic principles while belonging fully to society, cultivating love of Allah and welcoming honest questions rather than relying on fear or forced isolation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Normalizes doubts and explains the cultural gap between immigrant parents and Western-raised children.
- Rejects forcing children to choose between Muslim commitment and social belonging.
- Encourages principled participation in society while preserving Islamic identity and values.
- Urges parents to teach boundaries alongside Islam’s mercy, beauty, and forgiveness.
- Calls families to listen seriously to questions arising from school, society, the internet, and AI.
- Closes by emphasizing love of Allah before fear of punishment and praying for steadfast families.
In the khateeb's words
“we don't make our children choose between islam and belonging and it's absolutely a big mistake”
“i am a muslim and my faith shapes me and shapes my values my values at the same time i'm an active member of the society in which i live”
“islam is a perfect religion but the muslim are not perfect”
“ask about your faith ask about your identity ask about the doubts and the question you hear”
For the dinner table
Imam Mohamed Badawy reminded us that questions about faith and identity do not automatically mean someone has weak faith or is rebelling against their family. Young Muslims can belong to the society around them while staying grounded in Islamic values. Serving others, seeking justice, and being good neighbors are ways to live those values. He encouraged families to help children experience the beauty of Islam and Allah’s mercy alongside learning its boundaries. When difficult questions come up, we should listen with care and seek knowledgeable help together when we need it.
- When do you feel most comfortable showing others that you are Muslim?
- What is something about Islam that brings you joy or comfort?
- How could we make it easier to ask difficult questions about faith at home?
