Firm faith brings harder tests

“A man is tested according to his religious commitment.”

The khateeb, at 19:36

In one sentence

Allah tests His most beloved servants, so the Ummah must not despair of unanswered du'a but respond to trials with attentive worship, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and unwavering Muslim identity.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Opening praise and reminder that special times of answered du'a (Ramadan, Arafah, Friday's hour, last third of night) pass by quickly
  2. Shaitan exploits delayed answers to du'a to plant despair and sever the servant from Allah
  3. Answers can be delayed for decades: Musa's du'a answered after 40 years, Ayyub after 18, and the Prophet told the sahaba 'the victory of Allah is near'
  4. Hudayfa's hadith in Tirmidhi: abandoning enjoining good and forbidding evil brings communal punishment and unanswered supplication, seen in Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Sudan and beyond
  5. Allah does not answer an inattentive heart; khushu' in du'a and salah, modeled by the sahaba's stillness in prayer
  6. Surah al-Ankabut: believers will be tested; iman and action are inseparable
  7. Hadith of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas: the most severely tested are the prophets, and each person is tested according to the firmness of religious commitment
  8. Response to trials: post-9/11 examples of those who hid their Islam versus those who stood firm; the Prophet longs for brothers who believe without seeing him; Islam is a whole way of life, not a garment removed after the masjid; final call to use the last hour of Friday for du'a
Try this week
Make du'a with a fully attentive heart rather than while distracted by business, finances, and family thoughts
Pray salah with stillness and humility, without fidgeting, checking the phone, or turning away from the qibla
Enjoin good and forbid evil, starting gently, e.g., advise a brother praying distractedly to be more attentive
Follow every bad deed with a good deed so it is erased, and seek Allah's forgiveness
Strive to make at least one prostration in Masjid al-Aqsa before dying
Remain openly Muslim under pressure and serve as an ambassador of the Prophet at any age
