Faith requires obedience to the Sunnah
“You will not know how to pray without the sunnah.”
In one sentence
True faith requires complete obedience to the Prophet's sunnah alongside the Quran, accepting his commands without resentment, neither adding to nor taking away from the religion, because the sunnah is revelation (wahy) and a protected mercy from Allah.
The khutbah in 11 steps
- Opening Quranic commands to obey Allah and His Messenger and not nullify one's deeds (Surah Muhammad; Surah an-Nisa)
- Obedience to the Prophet is obedience to Allah; believers have no choice once Allah and His Messenger decree a matter
- Faith is incomplete until one accepts the Prophet's rulings with no inner resentment (Surah an-Nisa 4:65)
- Warning against the man who says 'between me and you is the Book of Allah' and rejects hadith; the Prophet was sent with the Quran and something like it
- The Quran cannot be practiced without the sunnah, prayer times, rak'ahs, and details all come from the Prophet
- The companions' immediate compliance: the gold ring, the prohibition of wine, removing shoes in prayer
- The modern attack on hadith targets narrators like Abu Huraira and Aisha, but the real target is the sunnah itself, driven by those who find Islam 'restrictive'
- Deeds require both following the sunnah and sincere intention; the religion is perfected, so bid'ah (innovation) is misguidance
- The scholars preserved this deen across history; the Quran and its understanding are divinely protected
- Personal testimony of growing up ignorant of the deen and a call to learn it, worship upon knowledge, and stop justifying haram
- Closing dua asking Allah to show truth as truth and falsehood as falsehood, then prayer
Try this week
Spend time learning the deen: read, attend scholarly discussions, listen to reputable scholars (including on YouTube)
Study the Quran with its proper interpretation and the science built around it
Learn the basics of wudu and salah, including the arkan (pillars) and what to do when you err in prayer
Stop justifying haram (e.g., riba, removing hijab); instead admit the shortcoming and ask Allah to guide you out of it
Repeat the Prophet's duas exactly as he taught them
Ensure deeds follow the sunnah first, then purify the intention for Allah alone
