Every Muslim must seek authentic knowledge
“If Allah wants to do good to a person He makes him comprehend the religion.”
Seeking authentic Islamic knowledge is an obligation on every Muslim, because Allah Himself exalts the people of knowledge, and abandoning knowledge is the root cause of the community's religious and social decline.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening ayah (Aal 'Imran 3:18): Allah ranks people of knowledge right after Himself and the angels, showing their status
- Al-Qurtubi and the command 'increase me in knowledge' prove nothing is more virtuous than knowledge
- Ibn al-Qayyim: reaching Allah requires insightful knowledge plus high aspiration; Surah al-Fatiha ties knowledge and action together
- Second evidence, Surah al-Zumar: those who know are not equal to those who do not; a true scholar implements what he learns
- Third evidence, Bukhari/Muslim hadith via Muawiyah: whom Allah wants good for, He grants understanding of the religion; Ibn Hajar's three rulings
- Consequences of abandoning knowledge: 20-second TikTok/YouTube deen, fatwa shopping, marital and moral decay, isms replacing religion, loss of Muslim identity in adults and children
- Second half: practical steps, learn the basics (tawhid, pillars, fiqh, seerah), fiqh of what concerns you (business, zakah, hajj), start small but stay consistent daily
- Closing recommendations: attend masjid classes, read the seerah, set a daily Quran habit; closing duas
In the khateeb's words
“if Allah wants to do good to a person He makes him comprehend the religion I am just a distributor but the grant is from Allah”
“the people that you're seeing these clips of you don't know who they are you don't know if they're qualified you don't know where they studied but you see something and you follow it”
“try if you can every single day you set a time 10 minutes before I'm going to work I'm going to listen to the Quran for this amount of time”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah was about the incredible status of knowledge in Islam. The imam explained that in the Quran, Allah mentions Himself, then the angels, and then the people of knowledge, showing how honored they are, and that when Allah wants good for someone, He gives them understanding of the religion. But he warned that real knowledge isn't just collecting facts or watching short clips online; it's learning from trustworthy teachers and actually living what you learn. He reminded us that many of us study for years for our careers but don't know the basics of our own deen, like how to pray correctly or pay zakah. The good news is the solution is simple: start small, even ten minutes a day of Quran, seerah, or a class at the masjid, and stay consistent, because Allah loves small deeds done regularly. Knowledge and action together are what make us the balanced, middle nation Allah wants us to be.
- If Allah puts people of knowledge right after the angels, what's one thing you could learn this month that would bring you closer to Him?
- The imam said we should know the Prophet more than any celebrity or athlete, what's one thing you actually know about his life?
- What's one tiny 10-minute habit our family could start doing together every day?
