Hope requires faith and action
“Hope goes hand in hand with action; otherwise, it's no longer hope, it becomes wishful thinking.”
In an anxious world, Muslims should cultivate hope grounded in faith, pair it with healthy fear and concrete action, and let those actions grow love of Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames modern anxiety through nuclear threats, genocide, planetary danger, and youth mental health.
- Explains fear and hope as complementary tools, with hope taking the dominant role.
- Uses reason, natural beauty, and the afterlife to argue that existence ultimately supports hope.
- Grounds optimism in Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, prophetic intercession, and the weight of the shahada.
- Shows that hope without action is wishful thinking, using the farmer and heart-as-soil metaphors.
- Connects disciplined action, gratitude, and love of Allah to resilience in personal and communal trials.
In the khateeb's words
“you know that the greatest struggles will lead to the greatest victories you know that confusion always precedes clarity and the more work it takes to achieve that clarity the sweeter that it is”
“hope goes hand in hand with action otherwise it's no longer hope it becomes wishful thinking”
“as long as you keep walking towards Him He will never stop running towards you”
For the dinner table
The khutbah says that fear and anxiety are real, especially in a troubled world, but faith teaches us to live with hope. Hope is not sitting still and expecting everything to fix itself; it means taking action through prayer, good deeds, knowledge, remembrance, and service. We should also care for our hearts by removing pride, anger, greed, lust, and hypocrisy. When we notice the blessings and love Allah has already given us, gratitude grows. If we keep walking toward Allah, we can trust in His mercy and help.
- What is one hopeful action you could take when something worries you?
- Which blessing do you sometimes overlook but could thank Allah for today?
- What does it mean to keep walking toward Allah?
