Why the Quran requires following the Sunnah
“Do not fall into these kind of traps.”
Rejecting the Sunnah while claiming to follow only the Quran is self-contradictory, because the Quran itself commands obedience to the Messenger and the Sunnah is preserved revelation that explains the Quran.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Announcements: prayers for Gaza/Sudan/Lebanon/Iran, shifa list, death announcement, AC apology, prayer time change, Umrah trip, family night, youth and self-defense programs
- Introduction of the 'Quraniyoun', people who claim to follow the Quran but reject the Sunnah
- Definition of tawatur and the Sunnah (what the Prophet said, did, or approved); the Quran itself reached us the same way
- Defense of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: the Imams only classified hadith; chains of narrators (sanad) were rigorously verified
- Quranic proofs that obeying the Messenger is obeying Allah and that the Prophet's religious speech is revelation (Surah an-Nisa, Aal Imran, an-Nahl, an-Najm)
- Al-Hikmah in 'al-Kitab wal-Hikmah' interpreted by scholars as the Sunnah, hence also preserved by Allah
- Warning to youth against social-media preachers who reject the Sunnah; Ali ibn Abi Talib's 'word of truth intended for falsehood'
- Eschatological warning: being turned away from Al-Hawd for changing the Sunnah, then closing duas and iqamah
In the khateeb's words
“Tawatur defined as Al-Quran was narrated, recited by or came to us from a generation after generation after generation.”
“Al-Quran Al-Kareem is everything that the Prophet Muhammad SAW said, did, or approved.”
“That all what they did, they just classified Al-Hadith. They sorted Al-Hadith. None of them wrote a Hadith.”
“So, my recommendation, especially for the youth, do not fall into these kind of traps.”
For the dinner table
At Jumu'ah today, Imam Jamal Zughbi spoke about people who claim to love the Quran while rejecting the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. He explained that the Sunnah is simply everything the Prophet said, did, or approved, and that it reached us generation after generation just like the Quran did. He reminded us that great scholars like Bukhari and Muslim did not invent anything, they carefully checked every chain of narrators and set aside anything doubtful, so the authentic hadith are a blessing preserved for us by Allah. He also pointed out that the Quran itself commands us to obey the Messenger, and that the details of how we pray, fast, and give zakah all come through the Sunnah. Finally, he warned especially the youth not to be deceived by so-called scholars on social media who sound impressive but lead people away from the Prophet's path.
- If someone told you 'I follow the Quran but I don't need the Sunnah,' what would you say to them?
- What did you learn today about how scholars checked whether a hadith was true?
- How can you tell if someone giving religious advice on social media is trustworthy?
