Learn major sins and seek forgiveness
“Shirk is to share with other than Allah what belongs exclusively to Allah.”
Because Allah holds people accountable for both major and minor sins, Muslims should learn how major sins are identified, avoid disobedience, and continually seek forgiveness.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces al-Hajjawi's conditions for accepting testimony, emphasizing personal uprightness.
- Explains the distinction between major and minor sins and how persistence can elevate minor sins.
- Highlights conscience, fitrah, and Hudhayfah's practice of learning about evil to avoid it.
- Presents scholarly criteria for identifying major sins and seven representative examples.
- Cites the hadith of the seven destructive sins and urges repentance and forgiveness.
- Concludes with supplications, a recovery prayer, congregational prayer, and a brief donation reminder.
In the khateeb's words
“And ala'adalah here doesn't mean anything about justice. It means that the person is upright.”
“So it shows that these 72 that he mentioned, he is telling you clearly, these are just examples.”
“Shirk is to share with other than Allah what belongs exclusively to Allah.”
“Stay away from these seven things that annihilate your good deeds. Completely exterminate and destroy them.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that Allah cares about both obvious and hidden sins, and that uprightness means living according to the Qur'an and Sunnah. The imam explained that scholars distinguish major and minor sins, but repeatedly choosing a minor sin can make it spiritually serious. He encouraged us to learn about major sins, avoid them, listen to our conscience, and ask Allah for forgiveness. He highlighted shirk and six other destructive sins mentioned in an authentic hadith. We also prayed for a community member recovering from heart surgery and were reminded to support the masjid.
- What is one small wrong you want to stop repeating this week?
- How can we show respect for what belongs exclusively to Allah?
- What can our family do to ask Allah for forgiveness and avoid harmful habits?
