Allah's will prevails over our desires

“You don't always get the results that you're looking for when you make an effort.”

The khateeb, at 16:29

In one sentence

Allah's will always prevails over human desires, even the prophets did not get what they wanted, and conversely, when Allah wills something, even the impossible becomes possible, so believers must build their iman on accepting His decree.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opening verse 'Wallahu ghalibun ala amrihi': Allah's will prevails, but most people don't understand
  2. Example 3: Nuh's son refused the ark, trusted the mountain, and drowned despite his father's desperate plea
  3. Example 4: Ibrahim's painful dawah to his idol-making father Azar; when threatened with death, Ibrahim stepped back and made dua instead
  4. Ibrahim didn't get his father's hidayah, but Allah rewarded him with Ishaq and Yaqub, both made prophets, Allah rewards in other ways
  5. Second belief: with Allah's will the impossible becomes possible, the angels' news of a son to Ibrahim's barren, elderly wife (Surah al-Dhariyat, Surah Hud)
  6. Example of Maryam: a virgin conceiving Isa by Allah's will; closing dua for iman, contentment with decree (rada bil-qada), and gratitude
Try this week
Build your iman on the Qur'an's lessons so life becomes easier when you don't get what you want
Learn and read the Qur'an with understanding, not as mere stories of what happened
When giving dawah and the person becomes aggressive, take a step back and make dua for their forgiveness and guidance instead of pressing on
Do not become discouraged or conclude Allah isn't listening when your dua and efforts aren't answered as asked
Ask Allah for the station of rada bil-qada, contentment with whatever He decrees, and be grateful to Him
