Allah gives better for what we sacrifice
“You will never leave a single thing out of taqwa for Allah, except that Allah will give you something better.”
True sacrifice means choosing Allah's pleasure over what we love, responding to trials with patience and good character, and trusting Allah's promise of something better.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Dhul-Hijjah and Ibrahim's sacrifice teach that Allah values taqwa rather than the physical offering.
- A hadith promises something better when a person gives up something for Allah, illustrated by Abu Hatim al-Razi's sacrifices seeking knowledge.
- The slander against Aisha and the Prophet's restraint illustrate patience, mercy, and sacrificing revenge.
- Prophets and those closest to them face the greatest trials, but the Hereafter gives those sacrifices lasting perspective.
- Listeners are urged to sacrifice comfort by attending Jumu'ah and helping youth remain connected to the masjid.
- The khutbah closes with a reminder to make du'a for people suffering around the world.
In the khateeb's words
“You will never leave a single thing, you will never leave a single thing out of taqwa for Allah, except that Allah will give you something better.”
“Allah will require sacrifice from us. Allah will require sacrifice from us. And the promise and the guarantee is that the closer you try to get to Allah, the more Allah will require sacrifice from us.”
“Because for the likes of Abdullah ibn Ubayy, there's only the dunya. And for the likes of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, there's the akhira.”
“for us to come and for us to show up even on hot days. Right? It takes a little bit of sacrifice but the sacrifice is worth it.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that sacrifice is not only giving money or comfort; it is choosing Allah's pleasure over what we want. Ibrahim, the Prophet Muhammad, Aisha, and scholars such as Abu Hatim al-Razi were presented as examples of patience, trust, and giving up what mattered for a higher purpose. When we face hardship, we should remember that this life is short, the Hereafter is lasting, and Allah can bring something better from what we leave for Him. We can show that sacrifice by attending Jumu'ah even when it is hot, helping our young people stay connected to the masjid, and making du'a for people who are suffering.
- What is one small comfort you could give up this week to do something Allah loves?
- Why did the khateeb connect coming to the masjid on hot days with sacrifice?
- How can our family help younger people feel that the masjid is part of their future?
