Read in Allah’s name and serve
“Read by the name of your Lord.”
The khutbah argues that Muslims should pursue reading, education, and reflection in Allah’s name, remaining humble about human limits and turning knowledge into worship, service, and disciplined daily habits.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The first revelation, Iqra, is presented as reading through Allah’s lens, including the signs of creation.
- Knowledge separated from Allah produces arrogance, self-sufficiency, and moral decline.
- The stories of Adam, the angels, and shaitan contrast stewardship and submission with ego.
- The speaker summarizes knowledge, language, writing, memory, and scientific breakthroughs as gifts from Allah.
- Families are urged to establish summer reading, exercise, prayer, remembrance, chores, and device-free conversations.
- A bedtime routine of Quran, adhkar, dua, and wudu is recommended before closing supplications.
In the khateeb's words
“But really important thing that we have to all remember is that it does not only say read. It says, Iqra. Bi ismi rabbik. Read by the name of your Lord.”
“They start reading and writing and start figuring things out, connecting the dots, building things, creating things, inventing things. But guess what? Not in the name of Allah.”
“We're here to serve Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. We're here to serve people around us. We're here to bring benefit to everything around us and prevent harm.”
For the dinner table
Allah gives us knowledge, language, reading, and the ability to reflect, so learning should begin in His name and lead us toward humility. The khutbah reminds us that people can become arrogant when they forget the Creator behind their abilities, while the angels modeled humility and submission. During summer, families are encouraged to read daily, keep a reading log, put devices away before bedtime, exercise, pray and make remembrance together, and share chores and conversation at dinner. Before sleeping, the speaker recommends Quran recitation, Ayat al-Kursi, the Three Quls, dua, and going to bed with wudu when possible. The goal is to enjoy free time while using it to draw closer to Allah and benefit the people around us.
- What is one sign of Allah you noticed today?
- How can we make our home more helpful and peaceful this week?
- What book would you enjoy reading before bed tonight?
