Faith must guide every part of life
“Deen is the totality of our life.”
Because human authority is legitimate only when aligned with Allah's guidance, Muslims must restore taqwa and embody Islam throughout personal, family, communal, and public life.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines taqwa as reverent awareness of Allah and warns against heedlessness and self-sufficiency.
- Uses human maturity and a teenager's car accident to illustrate the consequences of rejecting guidance.
- Explains Allah as owner and ruler, with humanity holding delegated responsibility as khalifa.
- Defines deen as revealed guidance and natural life encompassing every sphere, not mosque rituals alone.
- Warns that shaytan distorts religious understanding and links global problems to illegitimate domination.
- Applies the argument to Muslim history and the community's distinctive mission, calling for self-examination and collective work.
In the khateeb's words
“Taqwa means fear, they translate it, but it's reverence, it's reverential fear.”
“It is not just in the practices of spirituality. Deen is the totality of our life.”
“Love has to be acted out. It has to be displayed.”
“We have been chosen for a great work. That's what we have to carry with us.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that taqwa means living with reverence for Allah and remembering that He sees how we behave. Through a story about his son's car accident, he explained why growing independence still needs guidance and why mistakes call for mercy as well as responsibility. He said that deen includes our whole life, from worship to how we treat our families and care for our surroundings. He urged us to show love for the Prophet through actions that reflect his humility and mercy. Reflecting on his community's journey to Islam in America, he encouraged listeners to recognize Allah's blessings and use their knowledge, work, and resources to benefit others.
- When could remembering that Allah sees you help you make a thoughtful choice?
- What advice has helped you, even if it was hard to hear at first?
