Humanity must resist evil and repent
“Learn self-control and self-restraint so you can keep yourself away from all the evil which is in detail mentioned in the whole Quran and in the Sunnah of the Prophet.”
Humanity was created as Allah’s khalifa on earth, with responsibilities of self-restraint, resisting Satan, maintaining balance, and repenting sincerely after mistakes.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Adam’s creation and humanity’s role as khalifa on earth.
- Explains Adam’s knowledge as evidence of human responsibility and Allah’s wisdom.
- Presents Paradise and the forbidden tree as training in obedience, halal, haram, and self-control.
- Contrasts Iblis’s pride and rebellion with Adam and Eve’s repentance.
- Urges believers to acknowledge mistakes, repair violations of others’ rights, and seek Allah’s forgiveness.
- Concludes with three lessons: self-restraint, vigilance against Satan, and repentance while fulfilling the khalifa mission.
In the khateeb's words
“You have to do it in a balanced way. Fanaticism, extremism will disqualify you as a Muslim.”
“If you made a mistake... Accept your mistake. And if your mistake has involved certain violation of the human rights... Correct. That's your duty and responsibility.”
“Learn self-control and self-restraint so you can keep yourself away from all the evil which is in detail mentioned in the whole Quran and in the Sunnah of the Prophet .”
For the dinner table
Imam Khalid used the story of Adam to remind us that our life on earth carries a responsibility from Allah. He described us as trustees who should follow Allah’s guidance and live with balance. He drew out three lessons: practice self-control, beware of Satan, and admit our mistakes so we can repent. He warned against the pride of thinking we are better than someone else and reminded us to repair the harm our mistakes cause. His message was hopeful: the doors of repentance are open, and we can turn to Allah for forgiveness and mercy.
- When was it hard to control your words or actions today, and what helped you?
- How can we appreciate our own strengths without acting as though we are better than others?
- What could you do after saying something hurtful to help make things right?
