Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Sep 21, 2026.
Dress matters, but it is not everything
In one sentence
External appearance and clothing are an important, balanced part of Islamic practice for men and women, to be observed alongside inner taqwa without exaggeration or contempt.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames clothing (libas) as a legitimate but not highest-priority aspect of the whole deen.
- Rejects both extremes: making dress the entire religion and dismissing it as irrelevant.
- Argues that prophetic guidance changed clothing norms, including rules concerning men's dress.
- Explains clothing's purposes as covering nakedness and providing adornment, while emphasizing inward taqwa.
- Uses Adam and Hawa, rulings on gold and silk, and Umar's final counsel to illustrate the importance of dress.
- Urges listeners to examine their practice and teach children while avoiding humiliation and misplaced priorities.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“Libas is not limited to clothing, and definitely not limited to women.”
“The middle path is defined by the Quran, by the Sunnah, by the understanding of the Quran and Sunnah, by our pious predecessors.”
“Why is he making du'a for the exterior appearance if it doesn't matter? The exterior appearance matters.”
“the reality is that we will be judged by our hearts. And how we manifest that in our actions. Both.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Islam speaks to the whole of life, including how we present ourselves. Clothing should first cover what should be covered, and it may also be neat and beautiful within our means. The speaker warned us not to make dress the only measure of faith, while also not dismissing it as unimportant. Our hearts and our outward actions should support each other, and we should teach children with care rather than shame. This week, we can review our own habits, dress respectfully for the masjid, and avoid looking down on anyone.
- What does it mean to care about both our hearts and our actions?
- How can we talk about modesty without making someone feel ashamed?
- What is one way clothing can affect how we feel or behave?
