Keep learning with humility and patience
“We should be in that state of learning.”
Believers should pursue knowledge continuously, temper it with humility and forbearance, share it through education, and express God-conscious care for creation through gratitude, prayer, and service.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains clear and ambiguous revelation and the path to becoming grounded in knowledge.
- Urges lifelong learning, presenting believers as either knowledgeable or actively studying.
- Uses praise of Allah to illustrate how understanding deepens through continued learning.
- Teaches that knowledge must be joined with patience, dignity, forbearance, and humility.
- Shares Imam Husayn's reward for teaching his son and urges community support for educational programs.
- Connects God-consciousness with gratitude, care for creation, prayer for suffering people, and relief from hardship.
In the khateeb's words
“So we should be in that state of learning, either have knowledge and continue our pursuit of knowledge to, you know, to make our knowledge more in-depth, or be sitting and studying.”
“But if that knowledge or that understanding creates in us arrogance and impatience, then we truly have not understood the weight of that knowledge.”
“this is the blessing and the barakah of educating a person.”
“And with that, I will say that we ourselves should also develop that God consciousness through being aware of Allah SWT's creation.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that faith includes staying curious and learning throughout life. We can be students or teachers, but our knowledge should make us patient, dignified, and humble rather than proud. He shared how Imam Husayn honored someone who taught his son the opening chapter of the Qur'an, showing the lasting blessing of teaching. He encouraged everyone, whether or not they have children, to support the community's schools and care for people and all of Allah's creation. We can express that care by thanking others, praying for people facing hardship, and asking Allah to make difficult matters easy.
