Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Dec 13, 2025.
Avoid doubtful choices to protect your faith
“Leave that which bothers you for that which does not bother you.”
In one sentence
Because doubtful matters can erode faith, reputation, and moral boundaries, Muslims should avoid gray-area choices, consult qualified scholars, and cultivate a pure, God-conscious heart.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Distinguishes clear halal and haram from the middle category of mushtabihaat, or gray areas.
- Illustrates gray areas through business contracts, gelatin ingredients, and instrumented nasheeds.
- Explains prophetic guidance to avoid doubtful matters and consult qualified scholars.
- Warns that habitual gray-area choices gradually lead toward explicit haram, using the shepherd analogy.
- Uses examples from the Prophet, Uqbah bin Harith, Abu Bakr, and Umar to demonstrate caution.
- Concludes by urging listeners to choose what brings certainty and peace of heart.

Avoid actions, products, contracts, or media that remain genuinely doubtful after reasonable investigation.
Consult qualified ulama or scholars rather than declaring an unclear matter halal by default.
Choose the clearly permissible and wholesome option that allows you to remain comfortable before Allah.
Purify the heart through greater awareness of Allah so the body follows righteous direction.
Create distance from boundaries surrounding explicit haram instead of repeatedly approaching them.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“Whoever stays away from the obscure and the vague things in life, that person has protected their deen and their honor and izzah as well.”
“When the heart is purified, when the heart is clean, when the heart is full of the awareness of Allah, then naturally it will flow onto the rest of the organs of the body.”
“Leave that which bothers you for that which does not bother you.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Islam gives us clear examples of what is halal and what is haram, but some matters remain uncertain. The khutbah teaches that when something is genuinely doubtful, stepping away from it protects our faith and our reputation. Small compromises can gradually pull us toward actions we already know are wrong. We should ask knowledgeable scholars, choose the clearer option, and work on keeping our hearts aware of Allah. A peaceful conscience is a valuable guide when making difficult choices.
- Where do you notice gray areas in everyday choices such as food, money, media, or friendships?
- What helps you recognize when a small compromise may be leading you toward a bigger wrong?
- Who could you ask for trustworthy guidance when you are unsure about an Islamic matter?
