There is no limit to sincere repentance
“Is there a limit to how many times you can sin and ask for forgiveness and Allah will still forgive you?”
There is no limit to how many times Allah will forgive a person who sins and sincerely repents, so believers must never let Shaytan convince them to stop repenting or to disqualify themselves from doing good deeds.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening praise, shahada, and standard khutbah Quranic verses
- Central question posed: is there a limit to sinning, repenting, and still being forgiven?
- Answer: no limit, even thousands of major sins over decades can be forgiven, without belittling sin
- Hope vs. fear by life stage: elders with decades of worship should expect Allah's mercy; youth must take sin seriously
- Shaytan's 'triple trap': get you to sin, then stop you from repenting, then stop you from doing good deeds
- Don't wait until you're 'perfect' to do good, feeding the hungry, volunteering, and da'wah are needed now and the sinner needs them most
- Every child of Adam sins; what differentiates people is repentance, life is ultimately a test of Iman
- Closing duas for forgiveness, truth, unity, and justice
In the khateeb's words
“Is there a limit to how many times you can sin and ask for forgiveness and Allah will still forgive you?”
“You've been praying for 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 years of prayer.”
“or you're struggling with certain sins, you don't have to give up.”
“Allah, allow us to show the world that true freedom comes from worshiping you and none besides you,”
For the dinner table
Today the imam reminded us that Allah's mercy has no limit, and even thousands of major sins do not mean He will not forgive us if we turn back to Him. At the same time, he warned us not to treat sin lightly, especially when we are young, because one sin can hurt our heart, body, mind, and future. Shaytan wants us to fall, then stay down by making us too ashamed to ask forgiveness and too hopeless to do good. But being alive means Allah has not closed our book, so we keep asking forgiveness and keep looking for chances to do good, even when we do not feel perfect. The whole point of life is holding onto iman and coming back to Allah again and again.
- What's one thing you can ask Allah to forgive you for tonight?
- How can you tell the difference between feeling sorry for a mistake and giving up on yourself?
- Name one kind or helpful thing you can do this week even if you don't feel perfect.
