Seeking knowledgeFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 18, 2026.

Muslims need knowledge to worship well

“They are praying on cruise control.”

The khateeb, at 9:24

In one sentence

Muslims are Allah's successors (khulafa) on earth whose mission is to build and worship properly, but they can only fulfill that role by acquiring shari'i knowledge, the very knowledge the Prophet warned would be uplifted as a sign of the Day of Judgment.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Allah made humanity His khalifa on earth (Dawud, Thamud, Hud); the mission is to build, not cause corruption
  2. Muslims lack motivation in worship because they are distant from the aspect of knowledge
  3. In Surah al-Baqarah's creation account the word 'ilm appears eight times, knowledge is essential to being a true khalifa
  4. The Prophet listed the uplifting of shari'i knowledge (not secular knowledge) as a sign of the Day of Judgment, leaving ignorance behind
  5. Anecdotes of ignorance: an office-holder who cannot pray, transactional dua-only mosque visits, praying on 'cruise control,' the imam and the three-raka'at inventory joke
  6. Practical consequences: not knowing wudu, zakah, fidya/Ramadan rulings, and menses rulings, including mothers unable to teach daughters because it is treated as taboo
  7. Every Muslim must be either a scholar or a student of knowledge; the three basics are proper aqidah, bare-minimum fiqh of worship, and tazkiyah (removing bad traits, installing good ones)
  8. Conclusion: the Prophets left behind knowledge, not wealth, so attach yourself to the Quran and Sunnah; closing dua
Try this week
Learn the bare minimum of shari'i knowledge: make your aqidah proper, learn the basic fiqh of your worship (wudu, salah, zakah, ghusl, fasting rulings), and work on tazkiyah, removing bad character traits and installing good ones
Ask questions and seek knowledge actively rather than coasting as a layperson; be at minimum a student of knowledge
Mothers should learn the rulings of menses and teach them to their daughters instead of treating the topic as taboo
Enroll yourself and your children in the masjid's Islamic school, Sunday school, and youth programs (Al Huda Academy registration open)

For the dinner table

Shaykh Mahmoud taught us that Allah made human beings khulafa, caretakers, on this earth, and our job is to build and protect, not to destroy or spread corruption. He warned that one sign of the end of times is the lifting of religious knowledge, which leaves people unsure of how to pray, make wudu, fast, or give zakat properly. He gave the example of people who come to the masjid only when trouble hits, or who pray on 'cruise control' while their hearts and minds are somewhere else. The shaykh encouraged us all to return to three basics: sound belief, sound everyday worship, and tazkiyah, cleaning out bad character and replacing it with good. He reminded us that prophets did not leave money behind; they left knowledge, the Quran, and the Sunnah, and that is the inheritance truly worth chasing.

  1. What does it mean that Allah made us caretakers of the earth?
  2. Have you ever prayed or done something on 'cruise control'? What helps you pay attention?
  3. What's one thing about Islam you want to learn better this week?
