Knowing Allah's names transforms faith
“Knowledge of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is not just information but it is transformation.”
True monotheism requires not merely acknowledging Allah's existence but knowing Him through His names and attributes so that He alone becomes the sole object of devotion and the lens through which believers interpret every circumstance.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Arabic refutation of the claim that Jesus is divine, affirming absolute tawhid and the servanthood of Christ
- Story of Ibrahim in Mesopotamia rejecting idols and celestial bodies for the Creator of heavens and earth alone
- Application: every generation forms idols from ambition, wealth, status, ideology, comfort, and even the self
- The Quraysh acknowledged Allah yet fell into shirk through ignorance of who He truly is
- Allah's names are revealed to transform hearts and lives, not for trivia competitions
- Faith in Allah's names reinterprets trials, as Musa's trust at the sea shows
- Practical challenge: choose one divine name this sacred month, study its verses, and renew worship through knowledge of Allah
In the khateeb's words
“knowledge of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is not just information but it is transformation”
“faith alone did not change his circumstances immediately faith changed his interpretation of his circumstances”
“the scholars of Islam used to say that worship without knowing Allah becomes routine”
“the person who truly knows Allah does not pray because it is an obligation”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that Allah alone deserves our worship and that every created thing is temporary and dependent on Him. Like Ibrahim, we should notice the “idols” that can quietly take over our hearts, such as wealth, status, comfort, or our own desires. Knowing Allah through His names is meant to transform us: His being the Provider gives us courage, His forgiveness gives us hope, and His wisdom helps us trust Him when life is confusing. We were encouraged to choose one name of Allah during Muharram, study it, and practice living by its meaning. Allah is Al-Hayy, the Ever-Living, so we should attach our hearts to Him above everything that eventually fades.
