Avoid sin and grow in obedience

“You don't surround yourself by haram or you don't take the steps that lead towards haram.”

The khateeb, at 20:31

In one sentence

The khutbah teaches that Muslims should completely avoid what Allah forbids, fulfill His commands according to their genuine ability, continually improve, and ask only beneficial questions.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Explains the hadith’s command to avoid prohibitions completely and perform obligations according to ability.
  2. Applies complete avoidance to alcohol, gambling, zina, and environments or steps leading toward sin.
  3. Distinguishes inability to avoid sin from limited capacity in obligations such as Hajj, fasting, and prayer.
  4. Urges listeners to maximize their abilities, improve gradually, repent after shortcomings, and serve through their individual strengths.
  5. Uses the Hajj command and the story of the cow to explain how unnecessary questions can complicate clear guidance.
  6. Distinguishes blameworthy debate-oriented questions from beneficial questions needed to practice Islam correctly.

The khutbah taught that when Allah forbids something, we should keep away from it and from the paths leading to it. When Allah commands something, we should do as much as we are genuinely able, without treating imperfection as an excuse. We should keep improving, repent when we fall short, and use our particular abilities to serve Allah and the community. The speaker also warned against asking questions merely to debate or complicate clear guidance. But questions that help us practice our faith are good, even when they feel embarrassing.

  1. What is one small step we can take to stay farther from something harmful?
  2. Where could each of us use a strength to help our family or community?
  3. How can we make sure our questions help us learn and act?
