Fight the soul with knowledge and patience
“Knowledge is light and ignorance is darkness.”
Believers must wage the daily struggle against the soul and Satan by learning and practicing Islam, teaching others patiently, and guarding their creed, worship, and treatment of fellow Muslims.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The first invisible enemy is the soul, which must be fought through beneficial Islamic knowledge.
- Knowledge must be applied, taught to others, and pursued with patience rather than concealed.
- Satan attacks through doubts, desires, and confusion about Allah, faith, and divine decree.
- Believers should guard their creed, remain focused during prayer, and resist pride in worship.
- Muslims must avoid suspicion, investigating fellow believers, and backbiting.
- The khutbah closes with supplication and reminders about justice, excellence, family ties, and avoiding wrongdoing.
In the khateeb's words
“we have to fight our souls to learn learn any beneficial knowledge that will help to give us light and take us away from darkness because knowledge is light and ignorance is darkness”
“to know and to apply what you know are two two different things to know and to apply what you know are two different things”
“every time you say allahu akbar to make salah you know when you say allahu akbar you open the door to talk to you creator to have conversation with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“our business is to help but it's not our business to check others you know it's not our business to have doubt in others”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that working on ourselves takes daily effort. He encouraged us to learn beneficial knowledge, especially about Allah and His Messenger, put it into practice, and share it with others patiently. He warned that Shaytan tries to pull us away from Allah through doubt, desires, distractions in prayer, and pride in our worship. He also reminded us to be patient with Allah’s decisions and to help others without becoming suspicious or talking about their faults. He ended by asking Allah for knowledge, pure intentions, and acceptance of our worship.

- When your mind wanders during prayer, what could help you remember you are speaking to Allah?
- How could you help someone who makes a mistake without embarrassing them or spreading the story?
